Life sciences in Niedersachsen: Facts and figures

MPIs, Helmholtz, Leibniz Institute, European institutes and Fraunhofer: Niedersachsen is a heavyweight when it comes to life sciences research. A well-networked research landscape and an innovative business environment of startups, SMEs and companies make it one of the leading biotech clusters with many excellent research institutes. Two Nobel prizewinners of the last decade even came from Niedersachsen, namely Prof Emanuelle Charpentier in 2020 and Prof Stefan Hell in 2014.

Infection biology

New drug and vaccine candidates are developed at the Centre for Infection Research in Niedersachsen.

Partners of the Translation Alliance in Niedersachsen (TRAIN) offer all of the relevant expertise across the entire value chain – from the identification, validation and optimisation of potential drug candidates to the production of test materials under GMP conditions and cell and animal models as well as initial clinical studies on humans.

The German Centre for Infection Research in Niedersachsen (DZIF) coordinates all research activities into infectious diseases throughout Germany – from research findings to use on patients.

Neurobiology

Neurobiology research in Göttingen has an excellent reputation worldwide. Scientists here research the molecular mechanisms of the brain’s function and the development of neurological and neurodegenerative illnesses.

High-end neurosurgery (INI International Neuroscience Institute) is offered in Hannover: the INI is considered one of the best equipped specialist hospitals in the world for the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the brain, spinal cord, spine, skeletal system and nerves.

Regenerative medicine

From theory into practice: Three universities and 42 research groups work hand-in-hand in the Niedersachsen Centre for Biomedical Engineering, Implant Research and Development, NIFE for short. The aim: to research biological, biohybrid and biofunctionalised implants for restoring failed organ functions, with a particular focus on heart, ear, tooth and orthopaedic implants.

The efficient translation of research results into clinical practice is ensured by certified and accredited facilities as well as close partnerships across the industry.

 

Medical technology

  • Better hearing thanks to Niedersachsen Niedersachsen is among the best when it comes to hearing research thanks to the research carried out by the hearing centres in Oldenburg and Hannover as well as the developments and products of renowned manufacturers such as Advanced Bionics, Hörsys, Sennheiser and Kind Hörgeräte.
  • Approximately 80% of the hearing aids sold worldwide are the result of research from Niedersachsen. More cochlea implants are carried out at Hannover Medical School than anywhere else in the world.
  • Global players, such as Ottobock HealthCare, a world leader in the field of prosthetics and orthotics, come from Niedersachsen. The Ottobock team is also a proud sponsor of German athletes in the Paralympics.

 

Veterinary medicine

Thanks to the close connection between the excellent veterinary and human medicine sectors as well as the strong agrifood sector, Niedersachsen offers the best setting for a one-health approach, whereby health is regarded as the relationship between humans, animals, food and the environment. The Research Centre for Emerging Infections and Zoonoses at the University of Veterinary Medicine represents the interdisciplinary anchor point here.

SMEs and large companies from the veterinary medicine sector look after the health of animals with diagnostic products, vaccines and drugs.
